Media House LCC: Virtual Training With RL Applications
Skoolaborate’s new Media Communications Centre is set to launch on
target this Friday, April 2nd. The centre is located on Canada Island
and is equipped with a fully functional photography studio and green
screen video production studio. Each wing is also equipped with
in-world video tutorials that enable students and teachers to learn at
times that are convenient for their part of the globe.

The photography wing is outfitted with SecondLife’s state-of-the-art
PhotoLife 3.0 studio, which includes a variety of backdrops, filters,
poses, flash settings, and much more. The training videos are designed
to provide students with an introduction to SLR photography, allowing
them to review numerous concepts, practice virtually, and then apply
these skills in the real world.

A short stroll to the west wing will land you in the video production
centre, which is equipped with a news set, a green screen centre, and
fully functional lighting. Training videos are focused upon short film
production and broadcast journalism, and include units on
pre-production (research and writing), production (i.e., filming,
sound, etc) and post-production (Adobe Premiere & Final Cut). Once
again, students can learn and practice in-world, and then use these
skills in real-world settings.

The Media Centre is located on Skoolaborate’s first winter sim,
appropriately titled Canada Island. Though the sim is still under
construction, students can now take the ski lift to the top of Cyprus
Mountain, site of numerous Olympics events at the Vancouver games, and
race each other in bobsled competitions, snowboarding and skiing
events. After a long day of outdoor fun, students can head over the
central wing of the Media Communications Centre for some Après-ski,
where they can enjoy a friendly in-world game of backgammon or chess.

This project has been in development on the main grid, under the group
Media House LCC, for about a year now. It was developed with the help
of photography and video professionals, and packaged within a multiple
intelligence framework. Future plans include a concerted effort to
work with our neighbors in Lingualand to produce training videos in
other languages. For further details, visit our website at
www.education.ca/secondlife; we have posted a couple of sample videos,
the most recent of which includes a video interview with Westley
Field, the founder of Skoolaborate.
