I run the largest virtual high school in Saskatchewan Canada and would be interested in exploring the possibility of creating and working with some other schools around the world in this venue. However I am new to this and would need some help on how to proceed.

We would like to be an island in your world. School has just started for us and my year ten technology would begin building and other classes would come on board if we can become involved.

I work for a Bronx middle school, NY, from Australia - a crazy but fantastic partnership. This school has made tremendous leaps forward in their use of technology, but they have not explored Second Life yet (although I had the pleasure of joining Peggy Sheehy from Suffern for dinner during my last trip to NY).
I'd really like to talk to a few teachers about getting involved. Please keep us in mind.

There needs to be away for educators to visit and see what is going on without having to initially commit to something. Give them some time to see the possibilities. We tend to be might busy you see.

Unfortunately the process of letting and getting people in is so time consuming that we can't afford the time for people to visit and look around. This would also require police checks etc, that is why the initiative is safe. The best place for a glimpse at what we do is via the blog. Soon we will have a main grid presence where we will host information evenings etc

I also am interested in Skoolaborate but need more information. I work for a private Catholic laptop high school. I am in SL and working with other educators on multiple projects.

Is the a financial commitment involved, other than the background check? Am I missing something? - Thanks!

Hi Katherine,
Yes we all contribute towards the islands purchase fee. Collectively it ends up cheaper than doing it by ourselves with the benefit of having a community, access to online units of work and more. We negotiate with each partner depending on numbers of students and situation of each school.

I'm the eLearning Coach at a special educational needs school in Australia. We are interested in working with our students in a virtual world. However whilst they are all over 13 yrs, we are still concerned for their safety online. This isn't just an island in Teen SecondLife/SecondLife is it? How can I assure my Principal that Skoolaborate will be a safe environment for the students?
Posted by: Pam Wright | December 08, 2009 at 02:51 PM
I think I need to elaborate. What my original question should have been was .... are students able to get out of skoolaborate and explore outside? We'd prefer it if they only had access to skoolaborate.

My school does not do this. Can I join as an individual student?
Posted by: Hailey Willmann | January 24, 2010 at 02:39 PM
So sorry Hailey this is for students and organisations that students belong to, it is really about learning for those students and their teachers. You could try Global Kids who allow any student in.

All students and their teachers are restricted to our private islands. No one can leave and no one can come in. Any adult who comes in must have a legal check that says they can work with children.

Happy to discuss this more but please tell me what other internet experience has adult police checks, restricted access to only selected schools, discipline policies, values based activities etc - yes it is safe
